Des Connall Remembered

Another former District Attorney has passed away this year. You might recall we had a previous post about Harl Haas, today, as reported through local media sources, former Multnomah District Attorney Des Connall passed away due to complications from heart surgery.

He served as district attorney of Multnomah county from 1970-1972. Connall was defeated by Haas for re-election as DA in 1972. Here are two pins from his 1972 campaign.

I am not all that familiar with local Portland politics from the early 1970s and do not have access currently to a newspaper archive where I can read about why voters opted for Haas over Connall in 1972.

While Connall had garnered a solid reputation in his long legal career, that reputation was being undermined by possible ethics violations from the Oregon State Bar against his firm. The problems and recent passing of his daughter and legal partner also contributed to recent troubles with his legal practice. He had just resigned from the Oregon Bar in October of 2013.

I am unaware of any other campaign relics out there, though I bet some Oregon members might be able to let us know if there are any more out there.
