George HW Bush Letterhead from 1980

The next item this week we are going to present from the campaigns of George Herbert Walker Bush is a sample of letterhead from his 1980 Oregon Primary campaign. I was able to pick this sample up from eBay a couple years ago from a local seller in West Linn, Oregon. The lot came with a sample of the letterhead, envelope and campaign brochure.

The brochure appears to be a generic one sent out from his main campaign office Houston and just offers general information about candidate Bush. The Oregon Primary was the last campaign that Bush would be able to get more than 20% of the vote before the convention in Detroit.

While he scored early wins in the Iowa Caucus, Michigan and Pennsylvania primaries (winning a total of 7 contests) he could not overcome Reagan's electoral advantages.

Oregon APIC member Grant Schott sent us this image of a t-shirt used in the 1980 Oregon Primary.

This was made for some event in Eugene shortly before the primary. I have not been able to find any articles from the Eugene Register-Guard yet about Bush making an appearance.

Other Oregon members may have buttons or stickers from his 1980 Oregon effort. I have a packet that was given out to the Bush 1980 National Finance Team from APIC member Matt Dole that listed the Oregon Steering Committee and included buttons and stickers from the national office. When I remember where I hid it, I will be sure to take a photo and post it here.

This post had letterhead, envelope, shirts, and brochures. Not everyone collects buttons, but we know the buttons are the most popular with collectors. It is good to give other kinds of items the spotlight from time to time. If you have a Bush 1980 Oregon related item to share, please feel free to send us an image with some info.
